Juan Mata is hoping it is third time lucky when Manchester United take on Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday.
The Spaniard, who scored the winner for Jose Mourinho’s team as they beat Sampdoria 2-1 in their final pre-season match in Dublin on Wednesday, has been involved in two Super Cups, but has been on the losing side on each occasion.
During his time with Chelsea they were beaten by Atletico Madrid in 2012 and then by Bayern Munich 12 months later.
However, Mata believes United are playing so well at the moment – they have won six of their seven pre-season matches – that they can get the better of the Champions League holders.
The 29-year-old said: “We [head into] the Super Cup in brilliant condition.
“I’ve been lucky to play two [Super Cup finals] and I’ve been unlucky to lose two.
“We will try again on Tuesday, but it will be hard against Real Madrid.
“I had a little problem but I’m happy to be back and to get a run-out ahead of next week.”
Manchester United, 7/2 to win the Premier League outright in 2017/18, can be backed at 13/5 to beat Real Madrid next week and at 6/1 to win the match to nil.
